How to Choose Where to Stay in San Cristobal

Stay near the waterfront for convenience

The waterfront along the Malecón is the easiest place to stay if you want restaurants, tour agencies, coffee shops, souvenir stores, and the main pier close by. Just know it can be lively at night, especially with sea lions barking, music, and people out walking after dinner.

Choose Playa Mann for a quieter stay

If you want something calmer, the Playa Mann area (#5 on the map below) is a great alternative. It still feels walkable to town, but the atmosphere is more residential and relaxed with easier beach access.

Do not judge every hotel by the outside

Budget hotels in the Galapagos can look plain from the street, and some buildings have unfinished concrete areas. I would focus more on cleanliness, reviews, location, air conditioning, and host responsiveness than curb appeal alone.

Do not panic if your hotel says “Hostal”

In Ecuador, “hostal” does not automatically mean dorm rooms or backpacker lodging. Many hostals on San Cristobal have private rooms, ensuite bathrooms, air conditioning, and family-run hospitality.

Expect some island quirks

Hot water and water pressure can be inconsistent in the Galapagos. We experienced this too, so I would not treat shower complaints as a dealbreaker. Fresh water is limited on the islands, so this is not necessarily a sign of a bad hotel — it is simply part of traveling in this very remote destination.

Is Puerto Baquerizo Moreno walkable?

Yes. One of the nice things about San Cristobal Island is how compact and walkable the main town feels. No matter where you stay, you are rarely very far from the waterfront. You do not need a car at all. The only time we used a taxi was transporting our luggage to the airport for departure.

Is San Cristobal or Santa Cruz better to stay on?

It depends on the type of Galapagos trip you want.

I personally found San Cristobal more relaxed, scenic, and easier to settle into for an extended stay. The town feels smaller and calmer, and we loved being able to walk almost everywhere while still having easy access to beaches, restaurants, and wildlife.

Santa Cruz has more hotels, restaurants, day tours, and overall busy activity. If you want the widest range of tour options and a busier atmosphere, Santa Cruz may be the better fit.

For many travelers, the best plan is to stay on both islands so you can experience the different vibe each one offers.

Final Thoughts on Where to Stay on San Cristobal Island

San Cristobal Island has a surprisingly wide range of places to stay, from simple family-run hostals to luxury waterfront hotels with infinity pools and ocean views.

Personally, I think location matters more than luxury here. Since the town is compact and walkable, choosing a hotel with a good atmosphere, strong reviews, and a location that matches your travel style will usually matter more than chasing the fanciest room.
