Not sure where to stay in Isabela Galapagos? I’ll help you avoid endless tabs and quickly choose the right hotel for you.
Trying to figure out where to stay in Isabela Galapagos can quickly turn into a research rabbit hole. There are beachfront hotels, small guesthouses, apartments, and boutique properties, but it gets overwhelming fast once you start comparing reviews and locations.
Bill and I spent two full weeks on Isabela Island, and one thing became obvious: location matters here. I can’t recommend the place we stayed, but it did get one thing right — being right on the beach. Watching pelicans dive, marine iguanas wander past, and the tides roll in completely changed how I’d choose a hotel here.
This guide will help you choose a stay that fits your budget, travel style, and need for easy beach access without opening fifty tabs.

If this guide saves you research time, booking through one of my red links is a small way to say thanks — and it never costs you extra. Thank you!

- Best luxury stay: Mi Playa Galapagos Beachfront Apartments

How to Choose Where to Stay in Isabela Galapagos
Stay as close to the beach as possible
If there is one thing I would recommend after spending two weeks on Isabela, it is this.
Stay close to the beach.
Unlike San Cristobal where staying near the waterfront mainly helps with convenience, the beach becomes part of the experience on Isabela. Some of my favorite moments here were not tours or excursions. They were simple moments sitting outside watching waves roll in, marine iguanas wandering across the sand, and pelicans repeatedly dive-bombing for fish.
The beach itself becomes part of the entertainment and memory making. But as part of the protected Galapagos UNESCO World Heritage Site, Isabela is also not your typical beach destination.

Puerto Villamil is small and walkable
The nice thing about Isabela is that Puerto Villamil is tiny.
Almost everywhere in town is walkable:
- restaurants
- tour agencies
- the beach
- grocery stores
- small shops
You really do not need a car here.
That said, a few extra blocks inland can noticeably change the atmosphere. Beachfront properties feel much more scenic and relaxed.
Hotel vs apartment on Isabela
For shorter stays of 2–4 nights, I would probably lean toward hotels.
If you’re staying longer like we did, I’d start looking at apartments too because of:
- kitchen access
- larger spaces
- extra privacy
- flexibility with meals
There are very few true luxury hotels on Isabela
If you are searching for large luxury resorts, you may be surprised.
Isabela feels quieter and more laid-back than Santa Cruz, and most properties are smaller boutique hotels or apartments rather than full-service resorts.
Smaller beachfront properties can sell out fast
Many of the most appealing properties on Isabela have very limited inventory. If one stands out to you, I would not wait too long to book these properties.

My Favorite Local Food & Drink on Isabela Island
Bill and I spent two weeks on Isabela, and these were a few places we kept coming back to. Keep in mind, I am frugal to my very core! 😉
Best Sunset Drinks Spot
Pink Iguana Bar. As the sun started dropping lower, we often walked down to the Pink Iguana and grabbed Happy Hour drinks. It honestly felt a little like Florida — people sitting in the sand with drinks in hand just watching the sunset.

Best Budget Food Finds
Bill and I mostly skipped the beachfront restaurants and walked a few blocks inland to eat where the locals eat. Our favorites:
Best Budget Liquor Find
Near the end of our stay, I came across a small bright orange liquor store around the corner from Mangrove Restaurant on Antonio Gil.
It does not have a name or sign and I couldn’t find it on Google Maps, but my usual spiced rum was around $5 cheaper than anywhere else in town that we checked.
Not exactly a Bucket List attraction, but definitely a useful little discovery if you are staying for several days.

Final Thoughts on Where to Stay in Isabela Galapagos
If you are still trying to figure out where to stay in Isabela Galapagos, I would personally narrow it down based on one thing: beach access.
I expected Isabela to be mostly about tours and wildlife, but some of my favorite memories were much simpler — sitting near the beach watching waves roll in and wildlife wander by while the light changed throughout the evening.
