Too Many Hotels in La Fortuna? I Spent Hours Reading Reviews So You Don’t Have To
La Fortuna is one of Costa Rica’s most popular towns—and with hundreds of hotels, resorts, and rentals in the area, choosing where to stay can get overwhelming fast. When I started looking for the best places to stay in La Fortuna, I fell into that same deep rabbit hole.
So I’ve done all the research so you don’t have to. After digging through reviews, comparing locations, and even reaching out to property owners, I’ve found the best places to stay for every style and budget.
Whether you’re after a 5-star hot springs resort, a cozy jungle villa, or a budget-friendly apartment downtown, this guide will help you find your perfect match. You can use the Table of Contents below to jump to the budget category you want, or just keep scrolling.
What to Know Before Booking in La Fortuna
Before you book your stay, it helps to understand how the La Fortuna area is laid out—and how your travel style affects the best lodging choice for you.
Understand the Location Trade-Offs
Some of the most scenic properties are a good 20–30 minutes from town. That’s great if you have a rental car and want seclusion. Not so great if you plan to walk to restaurants or book last-minute tours. Either way—check the map before you book.
Kari’s Tip: Even if a place says it’s in “La Fortuna,” it might be 20 minutes outside of town. Always check the map before booking—especially if you won’t have a car. Here’s a map of the properties I’m recommending, based on my analysis:

Do You Need a Rental Car?
If you’re staying in or near town, you can likely get by on foot or with tour pickups. But if you’re eyeing a more remote resort or want to explore on your own schedule, a rental car will give you freedom you desire. We like RentalCars.com for finding the perfect vehicle.
Match the Experience to Your Travel Style
Are you looking for peace and quiet—or to walk to dinner each night? Want to soak in hot springs or cook your own meals? La Fortuna offers everything from five-star hot springs resorts and glamping domes to quiet apartments and family-run villas. Decide if you want full-service amenities, self-catering space, or proximity to nightlife and tours.
Plan Ahead, Book Early
Many of these top picks book out months in advance—especially in the high season. If something catches your eye, use the RED links below to check availability and reserve your spot while it’s still open.

FAQs About Places to Stay in La Fortuna
How many days should I spend in La Fortuna?
If you’re short on time, 2–3 days is enough to visit a waterfall, soak in a hot spring, and squeeze in an adventure tour. But if you can spare 5–7 days, you’ll have time to slow down, explore more, and actually relax between excursions. Bill and I spent almost two full weeks here—and still didn’t have enough time to do it all.
When is the best time to visit La Fortuna?
The dry season (December to April) brings sunnier mornings and more crowds, while the rainy season (May to November) offers lower prices and fewer tourists. We visited in January and February—it rained often, but usually only for a couple hours in the afternoon.
Kari’s Tip: It’s a rainforest. Bring rain gear, no matter when you come.
How do you pronounce Arenal?
It’s pronounced “AIR-uh-nahl.” You’ll hear variations—even from locals—but this version is widely understood and accepted. Practice it now so you sound like a pro when booking tours or chatting with your driver.
Is it safe to drink the water in La Fortuna?
Yes, tap water in La Fortuna is generally safe to drink. Many locals and travelers (including us) drink it without issue. That said, if you have a sensitive stomach or are cautious when traveling, bottled or filtered water is always available and affordable.
Is La Fortuna Worth Visiting?
Absolutely. But where you stay can make or break your experience. Whether you’re after jungle luxury, a quiet condo, or a boutique lodge with a view, this list was built to help you skip the overwhelm and book with confidence.
Every one of these properties is highly rated, well-reviewed, and chosen for a reason—and now you don’t have to spend hours digging through tabs and traveler forums to find the right one.
