If You’re Choosing Between Los Túneles and Las Tintoreras in the Galapagos, Read This First

Short answer: yes — especially if you want an easy, beginner-friendly Galapagos snorkeling tour with a surprising amount of wildlife packed into a short half day.

During our 30 days in the Galapagos, Bill and I did snorkeling tours from all three inhabited islands, and Las Tintoreras stood out as one of the easiest, most accessible excursions we did.

Leaving from Isabela Island, this tour combines a wildlife walk, the famous shark channel, and guided snorkeling in a way is a great sampler of what the Galapagos is all about.

I’d call this one of the best “starter snorkel” tours in the Galapagos — and a Bucket List-friendly option if you want to see wildlife without committing to a long, rough boat day. And it was still enjoyable for experienced snorkelers like us.

Our Experience on the Las Tintoreras Snorkeling Tour

This was our second paid snorkeling excursion from Isabela, and one thing I loved immediately was how easy it was compared to some of the longer day trips. After getting fitted for wetsuits in town, we had only about a 20-minute boat ride to reach Tintoreras.

That alone makes this tour appealing.

Before landing, our guide Pablo took us by rocky outcrops near shore where we spotted blue-footed boobies, a Galapagos penguin, and other seabirds. It was a beautiful way to start.

Then came the dry landing and an easy guided walk over the lava trail.

We saw marine iguanas everywhere, sea lions tucked into the rocks, and the famous narrow shark channel where white-tipped reef sharks swam in the shallow water waiting for the tide to rise again. Watching those sharks packed into the channel was fascinating.

It felt almost like a mini wildlife safari on foot. Because the Galapagos is an UNESCO site, we respect and protect the wildlife by keeping a safe distance away.

Then came the snorkeling.

The water was chilly, but manageable once moving. Pablo led us to several sea turtles, a puffer fish, a manta ray, and schools of fish. The marine life was good and the water calm in the protected area.

Like on Los Túneles, one challenge was the guided group dynamic. Everyone swam fairly close together, following the guide, which sometimes meant more fins in my face than uninterrupted wildlife viewing.

That said, for beginner snorkelers, having the guide lead the group may actually feel reassuring rather than limiting.

What We Loved

• The Short Boat Ride – At only about 20 minutes each way, this is one of the easiest boat excursions from Isabela.
• The Shark Channel Was Unique – Seeing white-tipped reef sharks swimming in the narrow lava channel was something we hadn’t experienced anywhere else.
• Great Wildlife Variety for a Half-Day Tour – Marine iguanas, sea lions, boobies, penguins, sharks, and sea turtles — it packs a lot into a relatively short outing.
• It Leaves Half Your Day Free – This is a HUGE underrated advantage.

Because the tour is only half a day, you can pair it with another Isabela activity — snorkel at Concha de Perla like we did, go horseback riding, hike, birdwatch, or just enjoy the beach. That flexibility makes this tour especially appealing.

Things to Know Before You Book the Las Tintoreras Tour

• This is one of the best Galapagos snorkeling tours for beginners.
• The short boat ride makes it ideal if you don’t love long, rough crossings.
• I’d also go in knowing this is as much a wildlife walk as a snorkeling excursion — maybe more so. For me, the shark channel and lava walk were as memorable as the time in the water. But bring good shoes for walking on the lava rocks – my flimsy water shoes were not the right choice for that.
• If you’re expecting spectacular independent snorkeling with tons of time to linger over marine life, the guided group structure may feel a little restrictive.
• And if you’re already doing Los Túneles, just know there is some overlap.

Would I Choose Las Tintoreras or Los Túneles?

If I could only do one: Los Túneles.
It has more dramatic scenery and, for me, the stronger overall marine-life experience.

If I was a beginning snorkeler: Las Tintoreras
It’s the perfect place to snorkel in calm, protected waters without a lot of current.

If I had time for two: Do both.
I’d think of Los Túneles as the bigger expedition-style excursion, while Las Tintoreras is the easier, shorter wildlife-and-snorkeling complement.

Las Tintoreras works especially well if you want a beginner-friendly introduction to Galapagos snorkeling, while Los Túneles feels more like the bigger marquee experience.

Conclusion – Was Las Tintoreras worth doing?

Yes — especially if you want an easy, wildlife-rich half-day tour that doesn’t consume your whole day.

For me, the shark channel and wildlife walk were the highlights. If you want a shorter, easier Isabela tour or a great first Galapagos snorkeling experience, Las Tintoreras is a great half-day beginner-friendly tour.
